In 1996 Beaver College Folk Dancing left Beaver College after nearly 20 years, to move to Or Hadash in Fort Washington, where it became Beaver Folk Dancing at Or Hadash. Since then, there has been no international folk dancing at the college which, in the meanwhile, had become Arcadia University--until Yoana Koleva got there. Yoana, an international student from Bulgaria and now a junior, has long been an avid folk dancer. In the past year, she organized a folk dance club at Arcadia under the aegis of the International Club, got Sue Anderson to teach the group Thursday evenings, drummed up interest among her fellow students, and created a Facebook presence for the club. The spring, 2009 culmination of her many efforts was this highly successful Friday night semi-formal folk dance party. Open to the public as well as to Arcadia students, the event took place in the elegant Mirror Room and Rose Room of the Castle. The turn-out was gratifying as people of all ages circled up to dance: many Arcadia students, (and even some of their relatives), and members of the local folk dance community. Walk-throughs were provided as needed by Steve Clarke, Anne Ehrhart, Sue Anderson, and Carol Wadlinger. International food treats were set out for the break. All of this goes back to the enthusiasm and drive of Yoana Koleva, who seems to have inspired a movement that has brought folk dancing back to Arcadia after all these years! Enjoy the following photos!
